One of the Newborn Coachella Puppies Dumped in Trash Has Died Officials Say

One of the seven puppies that were left in a dumpster in Coachella, California on April 18 has reportedly died, a Department of Animal Services spokesman said Thursday.

The good news? The remaining six puppies appear to be thriving.

Spokesman John Welsh says the other 38 dogs that were removed from the woman's house are still being cared for by a veterinary team and animal care technicians at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms. Veterinarians say no serious ailments were reported among the confiscated dogs.

Officials also say they do not have an idea which dog may have been the mother of the dumped puppies. Several of the female dogs among the 38 appear to have had litters recently.

The volunteer who is fostering the puppies broke the news that she lost one in a post on Facebook.

i lost the little tiny runt yesterday... my heart is so broken. he was just so weak and held on for as long as he could ūüė≠ when i got him he was pale and kind of flat looking, so i think he was the cushion that saved his siblings. as the lady threw them in the bag, i think he was at the bottom and took the hit when all of his siblings landed on him. i gave it everything i had in me, but he never grew. he never recovered. i wanted so much for him to make it and we all were rooting for him. we gave him so much love, but i guess god had other plans *fly free my baby* the other 6 are doing good so far, i hope that they'll hold on and keep thriving. here is their update on the remaining 6 ‚̧

The 3-day-old puppies were tied into a plastic bag and dropped in the recycling bin behind an auto parts store on April 18. Security video showed a woman, later identified as Deborah Sue Culwell, exit a jeep with the bag and place it in the bin. A short time later, a passerby was rummaging through the bin when he discovered the abandoned puppies.

Authorities were able to identify Culwell and arrested her late Monday afternoon on suspicion of felony animal cruelty. She posted bail and is expected back in court later this month.

If the dogs are legally relinquished, animals services say they will put the remaining puppies up for adoption.
