Police: Texas Woman Lived With Mother's Decaying Remains for Three Years

Police in Texas say they've arrested a woman who lived with her mother's decaying corpse in plain view in the house they shared for the last three years.

According to the release from the Sequin Police Department, investigators conducting a Child Protective Services investigation at the home last week discovered the woman's remains where her daughter, Delissa Crayton, 49, still lives with her disabled daughter.

Police say the woman's mother, identified as Jacqueline Louise Crayton, likely suffered a non-life-threatening fall in her bedroom three years ago, but her daughter did not tend to her mother's injuries at the time. Jacqueline eventually died on the bedroom floor at the age of 71.

"At the time of the fall, Delissa Crayton failed to provide adequate assistance leading investigators to believe Jaqueline died within a few days while lying on the floor," according to the release.

Crayton is facing a felony charge of injury to a child under 15 because investigators believe her disabled daughter suffered from living in the two-bedroom home with her grandmother's decaying remains. Delissa and her daughter shared one room in the home, while the grandmother decomposed in the other bedroom.

The teenager has been placed with other family members, police said.

Crayton, who works for the local school district, was described as well-respected in the community, KABB reported.

Crayton was taken into custody and is currently being held on a $200,000 bond in the Guadalupe County Jail. Police say they're continuing to investigate and further charges could be filed against her. She could face a sentence of up to 20-years in jail and a fine of up to $10,000.
