At least three people have been killed in what's being described as a military coup in Sudan.

According to reports, military leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan is leading the takeover which began early Monday (October 25). The general and others placed the prime minister of the transitional government under arrest after dissolving the military-civilian coalition slated to lead a democratic government following the 2019 overthrowing of military dictator Omar al-Bashir who ruled the country for 30 years.

In the wake of the takeover, Reuters reported soldiers shot and killed at least three people and wounded 80 others after protests broke out.

The US Embassy issued a "shelter in place" warning for Americans who are in the country.

"Sudanese Armed Forces have announced they are in control of the government. Demonstrations have been reported in Khartoum and around the country. There are unverified reports of violence against protesters. Flights are not leaving the country," a warning on the embassy's website reads.

"American citizens are advised to be aware of their surroundings and shelter in place, which includes not traveling to the US Embassy or the international airports in Khartoum or Port Sudan," it added.

The White House and State Department have expressed concern over the situation and have called for the immediate release of the prime minister.

"We reject the actions by the military and call for the immediate release of the prime minister and others who have been placed under house arrest," White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters who were boarded on Air Force One Monday morning (October 25).

"The actions today are in stark opposition to the will of the Sudanese people and their aspirations for peace, liberty, and justice. The United States continues to strongly support the Sudanese people's demand for a democratic transition in Sudan and will continue to evaluate how best to help the Sudanese people achieve this goal," she added.

Reports indicate that thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in response to the takeover.
