Florida Governor Urges Residents To Prepare For Hurricane Dorian

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Visits Hurricane Center Ahead Of Hurricane Dorian

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is recommending that residents prepare for the worst ahead of Hurricane Dorian. Speaking today in Palm Beach County, DeSantis recommended that residents have at least seven days' worth of food, medicine and water in the event of a power outage. DeSantis says the latest forecast shows that Dorian is a much slower-moving storm than originally expected and the potential for flooding is high. The governor says he is pleased to hear that President Trump approved his request for direct federal assistance. DeSantis says the state is making sure assisted living and nursing facilities have complied with rules about preparing for the storm.

Meanwhile, Mayor Buddy Dyer is declaring a state of emergency for the city of Orlando ahead of Hurricane Dorian.  Speaking today, Dyer said Dorian could be the most significant storm Orlando has seen in decades. Dyer urged residents not to be complacent and encouraged everyone to take the storm seriously. Fire Chief Richard Wales says they have made necessary preparations, but warned citizens that there will be limited rescue operations at times when winds are too strong.

The latest update from the National Hurricane Center says the storm is packing winds of 110 miles-an-hour. It's expected to strengthen into a major hurricane as it moves north of the Bahamas early this weekend. Forecasters expect Dorian to become a category four storm before it makes landfall along Florida's east coast early next week.
