At least six people, including an off-duty New York Police Department officer, were killed in a mass shooting in New York City on Monday (July 28). The incident occurred at a 634-foot skyscraper located at 345 Park Avenue, which houses the National Football League and Blackstone offices.
The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura from Nevada, reportedly entered the building carrying a long gun and opened fire, initially targeting the officer in the lobby. Tamura then moved to the 33rd floor, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to CNN. The shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year, based on data from the Gun Violence Archive.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with the New York Police Department and FBI conducting a floor-by-floor search of the building. New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area, while the city's emergency management system warned of traffic disruptions.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and law enforcement is actively investigating the incident. The New York Police Department and FBI are working together to understand the events leading up to the shooting. Mayor Adams and other officials have expressed their condolences to the victims' families and gratitude for the swift response of first responders.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
